The works on show provided an insight into the full spectrum of Gugging art. museum gugging presented 101 masterpieces by the Gugging Artists, extensively traveled works that were now to be seen at the site of their origination.
These Gugging “Mona Lisas” are scattered all over the world and many of them have been exhibited abroad more often than at home. From March 2014, they remained in museum gugging for several years.
The uniqueness of the most significant single works was highlighted through descriptions of their creation and history.
Among the 101 masterpieces were Johann Hauser’s famous three images of women, which finally returned to Austria after two decades in the UK, and the self-portrait by Franz Horacek, which became the museum gugging logo. Principal works by August Walla, Philipp Schöpke, Oswald Tschirtner, and those of many other artists who launched their career from Gugging: For instance, Philipp Schöpke’s slicing likenesses of people, Oswald Tschirtner’s Headfooters, or the above-mentioned self-portrait by Horacek. In addition, newer works by artists who work in the atelier gugging: Leonhard Fink’s fascinating cards, Laila Bachtiar’s intense works in pencil, or the paradises of one Karl Vondal. The large-format book that accompanied the exhibition featured full-page illustrations and explained the details of all works.
