Are you curious about which animals reside in this zoo? Then come and wander with us through the museum’s rooms. You will encounter wild animals and discover new, unknown species.

In the interactive workshop, children explore the diverse world of animals in art. We look back at the earliest cave paintings and then take a glance at modern representations on Instagram. Together, we examine works by Gugging artists and learn how animals are depicted in different artistic styles.

After the museum tour, we move to our workshop rooms, where the young art enthusiasts can get creative themselves. They can paint, glue, or draw animals according to their own ideas. To meet the children's need for movement, they can switch between painting on large sheets of paper on the floor and drawing at the table. A zoo for their own classroom is created.

Dive into the world of colors! We begin with a tour through the museum and admire the vibrant works in the new exhibition by artists from Gugging. Along the way, we discuss which colors we can name, think about how we might mix these colors ourselves, and learn about the color wheel and color mixing.

The new exhibition features wonderful artworks created with bold acrylic paints or delicate colored pencils. Taking a closer look at the pieces opens up new perspectives on how colors can have an effect.

In the creative part, we mix our own favorite colors from the three primary colors. Once we’ve created the perfect color, we let it dry—you can then take it home and use it like watercolor paints. This program applies only to the permanent exhibition.

In this interactive program for students aged 11 and up, we explore and question the concept of ‘art’: What makes something a work of art? Who decides what art is, and what do I expect from art? We learn different methods of looking at images and work together to uncover hidden signs and symbols in artworks. Along the way, we discuss: What does art actually want from me—should it move me, please me, or even unsettle me?

During this tour, students discover fascinating insights into the history of art from Gugging, from its beginnings all the way to the museum’s 20th anniversary.

In the creative part of the program, students work in small groups to transform their impressions into posters, discovering collage as a form of artistic expression.

This program always includes a museum tour followed by a creative workshop. We begin by exploring the history of the institution—from its origins as a psychiatric hospital to its transformation into a museum—and explain Jean Dubuffet’s concept of Art Brut. We ask ourselves: What is art in the first place? What belongs to it, and what is left out? Along the way, we delve into 20th‑century art history, touch on the Surrealists, and arrive in the present with artists from Gugging. Topics such as inclusion, the destigmatization of people with mental illnesses, and reconnecting with one’s own creativity are integral to the educational approach.

In small groups, participants engage with individual artworks by trying out different methods of visual analysis. Presenting their findings to each other encourages discussion.

In the creative part of the workshop, we focus on ink drawing, a technique favored by many Gugging artists. Students can experiment with everything from Japanese landscape painting using brushes to detailed illustrations using nibs and quills.

For 20 years, the museum has presented artworks from Gugging as well as positions of Art Brut from around the world. The exhibition tour highlights the history and founding of the museum, which is known as an international center for Art Brut.

The guided tour focuses on current discussions that question the concept of ‘Art Brut’ and encourage reflection on the role of art in society. We aim to engage students in conversations about topics such as diversity and inclusion in art and encourage them to share their perspectives with us.

In 2026, the museum celebrates its 20th anniversary. This milestone is the occasion for one of the most comprehensive presentations of Gugging art across the entire exhibition space and forms the centerpiece of the anniversary year. The exhibition focuses on 20 Gugging artists. Together, we will explore and discuss a selection of these artists and their works.
