Roger Ricco will speak about the liberating and healing effect that art can have on the troubled mind and spirit. With videos, images, and stories he will present his experiences and insights from working with and exhibiting works by artists with mental disabilities for over 35 years. This presentation and discussion will focus on the American artists whom he has worked with closely.

 

Short Bio:

Roger Ricco wears many hats. He is an exhibiting artist in both photography and painting and was awarded the prestigious Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome in painting. He founded Ricco/Maresca Gallery with his associate Frank Maresca in 1979. Together they have published seven now classic books on the field of self-taught and outsider art.

Throughout its history Ricco/Maresca Gallery has represented and worked closely with many artists from art-based non-profits, such as the Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland, California, which is the gold standard of American non-profit entities working with people with mental disabilities and the arts.

Roger Ricco has a personal interest in the world of autism and art and speaks widely on the topic. He co-produced, advised, and was interviewed for several documentaries and participated in symposia and panels on the subject of the healing role of arts in autism and mental disabilities.
