In his 1922 study "The Artistry of the Mentally Ill" the Heidelberg-based psychiatrist and art historian Hans Prinzhorn published examples of the fantastic image worlds of psychiatric patients. With its aesthetic richness the book became popular beyond language borders and was deemed the “Bible of the Surrealists”. After the caesura of World War I artists discovered new formal means of expression in it to visualise the realm of the unconscious.
