At the centre of the exhibition is a walk-in reproduction of the Julius Klingebiel (1904–1965) Cell. Klingebiel was a psychiatric patient who spent many years as an inmate at the regional detention centre in Göttingen. He indefatigably painted the walls of his solitary cell with landscapes, animals, human figures, coats of arms and symbols, which he tried to structure though linear elements. Klingebiel’s painting fascinates to this day; walking into a photographic room installation of his “cell”, visitors experience his art in a very special way.
