Besides August Walla’s self-created polytheistic cosmos, writing and language play an important role in the world of this universal Gugging artist. The graphic lettering in his works often appears enigmatic and incomprehensible for us. He used familiar words but also neologisms and words from foreign languages – Walla possessed a collection of dictionaries of foreign loan words. He was especially interested in individual letters and always modified them. But Walla’s “alphabet” also included symbols, like the cross, the swastika, the hammer and sickle, whose meanings are shifted and ask for a closer look and interpretation.
