In their tour through museum gugging Christian Bauer and Günther Oberhollenzer focus on the fascination with art from Gugging. The two seasoned art experts examine works whose immediacy, multifacetedness, and sheer quality are well ahead of works by graduates of art academies. Quality is a central notion in the understanding of art from Gugging, which has increasingly been liberated from traditional standardisations in the last decades – such as “state-bound” art (Zustandgebundene Kunst). Today it is simply be seen as an excellent contribution to the world of art. For this reason, the future State Gallery of Lower Austria in Krems and its director Christian Bauer, with esteem for the creative work in Gugging, will involve artworks by the artists from Gugging in the exhibitions at the new house.

Christian Bauer is the artistic director of the State Gallery of Lower Austria. The new building in Krems by architects marte.marte plans to open its doors in first half of 2019. Bauer is an exhibition curator and publishes books about Austrian modern art and cultural management. The art of Egon Schiele has been the subject of two recent publications: “Egon Schiele. The Beginning”(Munich: Hirmer Verlag, 2013) which was followed two years later by “Egon Schiele. Almost a Lifetime” (Munich: Hirmer Verlag, 2015).

Günther Oberhollenzer is the curator of the State Gallery of Lower Austria. From 2006 to 2015 he was a curator at the Essl Museum in Klosterneuburg by Vienna. He is a member of the South Tyrolean Cultural Advisory Council and a lecturer at the Department of Cultural Management of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
