The Swiss Aloïse CORBAZ (1886-1964), whose artworks were created exclusively during her stay in a psychiatric hospital, which lasted more than 40 years, is the most famous woman in Art Brut. Her main motif was herself. Her depictions of both her own and fictional love stories are romantic, glorified, and borne of the notion of the fulfillment of the highest desires in love. From the early, delicate attempts to the highlight of the exhibition, the twelve-meter-long scroll painting "Rouleau de la nativité", the "Scroll of the Birth of Christ", the fantastic world of the painter can be discovered.

Johann HAUSER (1926-1996) became the star among the Gugging artists very early. With his incisive stroke, highly appreciated by other artists - Jean Dubuffet to Arnulf Rainer - his art was quickly recognized. Among Hauser's motifs, one in particular stood out: women. Hauser drew very directly erotic women with demonstratively large sexual characteristics. He reached his zenith in the summer of 1986 with the 'three women', three drawings that have now returned to Gugging and are thus accessible to the public.

Corbaz and Hauser created two completely contrasting views of women: romanticized and sexualized. Two variants of the female portrait in Art Brut that could not be more different and yet complement each other perfectly in these exhibitions.
The works come from the Kunstmuseum Solothurn and several private collections in Switzerland and Austria, including the Diamond Collection.

"gugging classics 3rd!"
Together with the temporary exhibitions mentioned above, the permanent presentation "gugging classics 3.!" can also be seen. Covering 700 m2, this show provides a comprehensive overview of the history and present of artistic activities in Gugging. In addition to the well-known representatives of Art Brut such as August WALLA, Oswald TSCHIRTNER or Johann HAUSER, the work of forgotten artists such as Franz GABLECK or Rudolf HORACEK is also honored. The exhibits in this exhibition area are regularly exchanged and supplemented.
